5-Step Budget Starter Checklist: Plug the Leaks in Your Paycheck

ree

Does it ever feel like your paycheck disappears the second it hits your account? Rent, bills, groceries, and a little shopping… and suddenly you’re back at zero. The truth is, most people don’t have an income problem, they have a budgeting problem.

If your money feels like it’s slipping through your fingers, this simple 5-step checklist will help you plug the leaks and finally take control of your finances.

Step 1: Track Your Spending

For 30 days, write down everything you spend. Yes, even the coffee runs and takeout. Awareness is the first step. You can’t fix what you don’t see.

Step 2: List Your Income Sources

Write out every source of income you have: job, side hustles, freelance gigs, even small streams. Knowing what comes in gives you clarity on what you’re working with.

Step 3: Separate Needs vs Wants

Circle all your non-negotiables: rent, utilities, groceries. These are “needs.” Everything else: shopping, entertainment, subscriptions are “wants.” This is where most people’s leaks hide.

Step 4: Create Spending Categories

Divide your money into categories like housing, food, debt, savings, and fun. A simple rule:

  • 50% = Needs

  • 30% = Wants

  • 20% = Savings/Debt payoff

Adjust these numbers if needed, but give every dollar a job.

Step 5: Automate Savings

The easiest way to save? Don’t rely on willpower. Set up an automatic transfer as soon as you get paid. Even $20 a week adds up over time. Pay yourself first.

Budgeting isn’t about restriction. It’s about freedom. When you tell your money where to go, you finally stop wondering where it went. Start with this checklist, and you’ll be surprised how quickly you begin to feel in control.
